Join us September 1–2, 2026, for a convening of lawyers, leaders, and advocates to share collective learning on the legal landscape facing forcibly displaced people in the United States. Conference attendees will explore collective enterprise and collaboration to address and fulfill the right of due process, security of person, and non-discrimination for all those moving through humanitarian pathways.
This conference centers on the challenges and opportunities facing Afghan and Ukrainian community members and others navigating through humanitarian legal pathways (SIV, TPS, parole, etc.) in Iowa and beyond.
Sessions marked with * count for CLE credit in Iowa. A total of 4.75 hours is available.

Join us to discuss the events since the US evacuation of at-risk Afghans five years ago. We will give an overview of the evacuation effort in the United States, successes and lessons learned through the process, and an update of the current situation for Afghans seeking safety in the United States.

Poetry Workshop with Hajar Hussaini
Join us on September 2nd, 2026, from 2-4 PM in the Shambaugh House. Hussaini is a graduate of the University of Iowa's Writer Workshop; her work received the 2026 Whiting Award in Poetry. Hussaini currently serves as an Assistant Teaching Professor at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York.
