IOWA CITY --- On Aug. 5th, 2025, Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-01) introduced the Afghan Adjustment Act to the 119th session of the United States Congress.
According to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, over 900 Afghan refugees have arrived in Iowa since August 2021—many resettled in Miller-Meeks’ district. The legislation was introduced across partisan lines by Miller-Meeks and Democratic Representative Jason Crow (CO-06). The bill is expected to receive support from Republicans and Democrats in both chambers of Congress.
The Afghan Adjustment Act will “provide a secure path to permanent legal residency for vetted Afghan nationals who stood alongside American forces during the war in Afghanistan,” according to a press release issued on Aug. 5th, 2025, released by Miller-Meeks following the bill’s introduction.
In the early morning hours of Jul. 20th, 2025, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social a reference to the Afghans the bill would support.
Miller-Meeks and Crow, both former service members in the U.S. Air Force and Army, respectively, responded with a draft of a 62-page policy introduced in early August.
“These men and women fought beside our troops and served alongside us with courage and loyalty,” Miller-Meeks said in an official quote, “I’m proud to lead this bipartisan effort with Rep. Crow to protect those who protected us.”
In Nov. 2024, Miller-Meeks narrowly lost her reelection bid to University of Iowa College of Law professor, Christina Bohannan, winning by 798 ballots. Bohannan has since announced her intention to run against Miller-Meeks in the 2026 midterm elections on Jun 17, 2025, according to the Des Moines Register.
