DOJ Accredited Representatives receive legal training to assist immigrants navigate the complex legal processes in the United States immigration system

Navigating the path to citizenship can be daunting for many newcomers to the United States. Yet, amid the complexities, a position created by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) offers legal training and an official accreditation to help immigrants in need of legal assistance.

DOJ accredited representatives stand as guardians for immigrants, guiding them through the intricate maze of legal procedures with expertise and compassion. They serve as trustworthy allies, ensuring that immigrants receive fair and just representation in their pursuit of residency or citizenship.

Accreditation is based on meeting specific criteria and requirements set forth by the DOJ, including completion of the necessary training and demonstrating good character and fitness. DOJ accredited representatives not only offer valuable guidance and support but also create employment opportunities that can hold personal significance for themselves and for those they help.

Saadat Ahmadi, one of the thousands of Afghan evacuees that came to the U.S. after the Taliban offensive in 2021, had the opportunity to learn about immigration law through his work with Catholic Charities, which eventually led to his role serving as a DOJ Accredited Representative and helping out others in his community. 

"Thanks to the support of Catholic Charities of Dubuque, I gained the knowledge needed to become a DOJ accredited representative. As an immigrant, I understand the complexities of the immigration system and am proud to help my Afghan community and broader immigrant communities navigate it more effectively, achieving greater legal stability. Though I initially thought it would be hard, I am thrilled to be in this position and make a meaningful difference," shared Ahmadi.

Similar to legal aides, accredited representatives assist immigrants by providing crucial support in various aspects of the immigration process. They help fill out forms, gather necessary documents, and prepare immigrants for interviews and hearings. Moreover, they offer invaluable guidance on understanding immigration laws and regulations, ensuring that immigrants comprehend their rights and responsibilities.

Accredited representatives advocate for immigrants before immigration authorities and courts. They articulate immigrants’ cases and work to secure favorable outcomes and prevent injustices. Whether petitioning for asylum, fighting deportation, or seeking family reunification, these representatives are committed to safeguard immigrants’ rights and interests.

Ayub Shinwari, an Afghan national who also came to the U.S. in 2021, gained immigration law experience through his work with the Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice in Des Moines. He went on to earn his DOJ accredited representative status to help serve his community with the complex immigration system.

“At first I thought that Immigration cases would be hard and complicated but I realized that everything is easy and I learned how to handle these cases and be more efficient for our clients organization and community,” Shinwari said.

Accredited representatives often work within immigrant communities, fostering trust and accessibility. They establish vital connections with local organizations and service providers, creating networks of support for immigrants in need. Through outreach programs and educational initiatives, they empower immigrants with knowledge and resources, empowering them to navigate the immigration process with confidence.

In essence, the role of the DOJ accredited representative is paramount in upholding the principles of fairness and equity within the immigration system. Their dedication and expertise serve as beacons of hope for immigrants, illuminating the path towards a brighter future in the land of opportunity. As guardians of justice, Accredited Representatives embody the spirit of compassion and solidarity, ensuring that all immigrants are treated with dignity and respect as they strive to build better lives in the United States.
